Beer Industry of Florida, Inc.’s (BIF) members are an integral part of their communities. They promote safety in the areas where our families live, work and play. They are leaders in their communities and care deeply about promoting the responsible and legal consumption of malt beverage products. They work with the 130,000 American men and women of the beer distribution industry nationwide in an effort to eliminate drunk driving, alcohol abuse and the underage purchase and consumption of alcohol.
BIF members require that their sales personnel complete training before meeting with customers. They conduct sales meetings and their employees are reminded of their obligation as responsible vendors. Their promotional materials are created keeping in mind their responsibility to their communities. They also display their responsibility messages on all signs, banners, posters, trucks and other forms of advertising.
TIPS (Training for Intervention Procedures) is a nationally recognized program that trains managers, bartenders and wait staff to serve alcohol responsibly in any setting. Those who participate in the class learn to recognize signs of intoxication, prevent alcohol sales to minors and intervene with patrons who are already intoxicated. Find out more at www.gettips.com.
Underage drinking is a growing concern. BIF members have made many efforts to help combat this problem in our communities. They have joined forces with local representatives in their areas, from the police department, the Drug Education Council, and the county health department to form teenage drinking task forces to confront the problem of underage drinking in our communities.
BIF members work with local elementary, middle and high schools, local physicians, area merchants, the Girl Scouts and numerous civic organizations to help us deliver our responsibility message. They also work closely with college officials by sponsoring and leading workshops on campus to encourage safe, legal and responsible consumption of alcohol.
Alcohol is not like other consumer goods and can have serious consequences if abused by adults or consumed illegally by those underage. That is why BIF members take steps to ensure the safe and legal sale of malt beverage products and fight efforts to weaken regulations that exist to provide a safe and orderly marketplace.
Beer distributors are licensed at both the state and federal level. They operate within the laws of the State of Florida and the agency responsible for regulating alcoholic beverage distribution and administering prevention and treatment activities in our communities. The Florida system of alcohol regulation provides a transparent and accountable chain of custody in the sale of beer, making it easier to enforce our state laws and local ordinances. The system also regulates retail sales, ensuring that retailers hold the appropriate licenses and do not sell to those under the legal drinking age.
Within the regulatory framework, BIF members provide not only choice and value in their products but also participate in a wide variety of programs that promote responsible consumption. Programs range from providing free taxi rides home for bar or restaurant patrons to sponsoring alcohol-free after-prom events and producing educational materials to help parents talk to their children about underage drinking. Distributors also promote alcohol education initiatives, such as inviting guest speakers to schools and community centers to share their personal experiences involving alcohol.
